Langkawi Hotels

Why consider Langkawi for a holiday?

If you have never been to a place before, why would you risk going there, spending both money and precious time, without the definite assurance that you will have a great holiday time. This is the main reason behind such reluctance of going on holidays to completely new places.

What you are missing out though is the opportunity to experience a side of South East Asia no other part of the world can compare to. If you are the kind of person who enjoys sand, sea, and a tropical rainforest right next to it, Langkawi is the place for you. Langkawi is technically a cluster of up to 99 islands by which hotels and resorts have managed to maintain a ‘private beach’ per hotel or resort. Now imagine this being your holiday experience with that capability to travel from island to island or even just enjoy your holiday at a private beach belonging to the hotel or resort you’re staying at.

What more could you want than a relaxing day on the beach with a cold cocktail at hand watching the sun set amongst the islands before you.

The Sunny Paradise

Unlike the rest of the world, Langkawi is hot and sunny almost all year round regardless of the familiarity of “season changes” in the Western World. Due to Malaysia being so close to the equator, there is no such drastic changes in weather climate and the worst it could get to would be some rainy days and even so, the hotels and resorts would make this up to you in regards to amazing facilities and entertainment.

If you are the kind of person who goes on a holiday to laze around and relax giving yourself that break from the reality side of work, staying at the renown hotels or resorts such as Casa Del Mar Hotel, Datai Hotel, Andaman Hotel, Frangipani Hotel, Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort and Rebak Island Resort would definitely provide the finishing touches to a perfect luxurious holiday. All these hotels have their very own private beaches giving you that personal freedom away from overcrowded beaches.

Langkawi’s beaches are amongst the most beautiful beaches throughout the entire South East Asia. The sea is virtually unpolluted with the distance away from busy towns and cities. The beautiful scenery cannot be beaten with the 99 islands surrounding the area, a definite melt away for the perfect sunset or sunrise.

Things to do in Langkawi

If you aren’t for lazing around in a hotel, there are several things to keep you busy in Langkawi. Firstly, exploration of the island and the local people would be a great recommendation especially for those who are entirely new to the Malaysian culture. Above the culture itself, Langkawi is surrounded in tropical rainforest allowing visitors and tourists to trek amongst its paths. Considering Langkawi is a beach island, water sports as well as scuba diving have been a very hot activity for tourists to experience. The amount of activities available in Langkawi is virtually unlimited.

About Langkawi Island

 Langkawi Island

Characterized by miles of prestigious golden resort beaches, and swathed in the legends of ancient folklore – Langkawi Island represents a very modern, yet eco-friendly paradisical hideaway for couples and families alike. With an extremely temperate tropical climate and only mild seasonal precipitation, the lustrous year-round sunshine and temperatures in excess of 32 C attract thousands of international guests each year.

Whether you’re seeking a relaxing spa-oriented break beside sun-dappled pools and a quantative supply of mineral cocktails, or you’re looking to experience the wonders of an ancient rainforest – Langkawi Island has something to suit. Pantai Cenang is the largest beach of Langkawi, just over 3km in length and prime position for an abundance of outdoor adventures. The ragged topography of this Southern coastline lends itself to prime caving exploration and kayaking tours, while the relative calm, crystal depths of the Andaman Sea hides a plenitude of exotic marine life just waiting to be discovered by scuba-diving enthusiasts. Pantai Cenang also paves the way for a number of interesting attractions such as Underwater World; a maze of sub-aquatic tunnels built beneath a huge conservational aquarium, and the Pantai Kok Cable Car which offers a fascinating aerial tour of the lush, dense jungle surrounding Pantai Cenang.

The 34-room World Travel Award winning Casa Del Mar Langkawi presents one of the most prestigious Langkawi hotels on this quarter of the island, and the perfect romantic getaway for couples. Although bearing a well-deserved four stars, visitors will find that both the rooms and hospitality lend themselves to a surprising five-star standard.

Langkawi Island is especially recognised for it’s commitment to improving eco-tourism, most notably within it’s high profile resorts. None have taken this commitment so personally as the Frangipani Langkawi Hotel and Beach Resort located in Pantai Tengah, just minutes from the hubbub of Cenang. This 118-room luxury retreat was renovated in 2006 with notable changes to both the water and energy systems. Frangipani now proudly harness the benefits of solar technology, and have fitted all en-suite bathrooms with “rainforest” showers that use significantly less water.

Other efforts include sourcing local produce to boost the agri-tourism economy and involve local people in the running of this affluent resort. Semi-detached villas dotted throughout this 10 hectare resort present some of the very best secluded Langkawi accommodation options in the South. Pantai Tengah’s heart is dominated by wide shopping arcades and colourful street markets where you’ll really find how far your Langkawi Ringits will stretch. Duty-free outlets offer astoundingly low prices on a wide range of products from wine and spirits, to chocolate and tobacco.

Langkawi Island‘s adminstrative capital and cultural centre lies on the sparkling South coast, and is considered the gateway to the island – serving as the main port of call for connective ferry travel from Kuala Lumpur. A former fishing kampong, the capital saw considerable growth from the 1980′s onwards, and is now a semi-cosmopolitan centre with an abundance of shops and boutiques. The Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall is the largest of it’s kind on the island – an enclosed space filled with market stalls, boutiques and souvenir shops where you could easily lose yourself for a few hours.

Despite it’s recent rapid growth, there are still several interesting attractions within the heart of Kuah, notably Eagle Square where you’ll find a huge body of water and two terraces either side of the grand Eagle Monument. A number of stylish bars and restaurants line this – one of the most beautiful town squares in the world. Masjid Al-Hana – the town’s only mosque is also well worthy of a visit, even if just to admire the beautiful pink domes that scrape the azure sky. After an exhaustive day of shopping and sight-seeing, enjoy a relaxing stroll within the efflorescent Legenda Park where you may even spot the Island’s mascot – the legendary brown eagle.

Holidays In Langkawi

Holidays in Langkawi

Langkawi Island presents the ideal holiday choice for those seeking adventure, relaxation or pampering – without the negative aspects of mass tourism. The island cluster off the Western coast of Kedah boasts a plenitude of scintillating beaches renowned for their beauty, powder-like sands and relative isolation from the outside world. Pantai Teluk Burau Bay on the West coast of Langkawi is one of the most ruggedly beautiful and peaceful, while Pantai Cenang’s exclusive resort coastline offers an abundance of water-sports and diving opportunities to the nearby reefs.

Langkawi is by and large a multi-faceted holiday destination where visitors may opt to do as little, or as much as they so choose. The ragged, densely forested heartland offers explorers and nature lovers the perfect landscapes for hiking, climbing and wildlife discovery, while the mountains provide an alternative challenge in the form of abseiling and free-falling activities.

An adventure holiday on Langkawi Island is an experience for the entire family. The large resort hotels such as Frangipani Langkawi and Datai Hotel in the mountainous North offer adventure and tour packages for climbing, hiking and kayaking activities for guests of all skill levels. These can be purchased in conjunction with accommodation bookings and usually offer a discount for an all-inclusive package deal.

Langkawi’s reputation as one of the best preserved UNESCO eco-parks on the planet make it the perfect holiday destination for nature-lovers keen to interact with exotic species such as the relatively tame Beach Monkeys on Pulau Dayang Bunting, and the friendly horn-bills who are known to become rather attached to walkers. A jungle-trekking tour is the ideal way to experience the many secrets of the jungle. Learn about the medicinal properties of exotic tropical plants such as  the efflorescent Datura, walk beneath the canopy playgrounds of flying lemurs and get up-close-and-personal with the friendly mimicking parrots. For true nature enthusiasts, there are several large resorts offering Rainforest After Dark tours for a chance to see the myriad of nocturnal wildlife that also call these verdant jungles home.

If you’re a self-confessed shopaholic, the traditional kampongs and large towns of Kuah and Pantai Cenang offer a multifarious range of shopping opportunities. These range from colourful street markets selling local handicrafts, fruit, fish and vegetables – to the more recent shopping complexes  housing a variety of branded retail outlets. The Langkawi islands were granted tax-free status in 2004, meaning that literally everything is duty-free. Don’t forget to check out the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall – the largest of it’s kind in Western Malaysia!

The real attraction of Langkawi and her sister islands is the paradisical idyll, by which guests can really get away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The plethora of affluent resorts upon Langkawi and Rebak Island have recognised that the majority of visitors to the archipelago are just seeking a haven for relaxation, thus developing a number of exclusive spas and wellness centres among their many amenities.

The Datai Langkawi Spa is considered one of the most beautifully and ideally situated. Beset within the heart of the rainforest away from the to-ing and fro-ing of the hotel, the Datai Spa and Health Centre really is the place to lose yourself. Built within a traditional kampong style hut, the spa offers a wide range of natural and holistic therapies along with access to the saunas, outdoor jacuzzis and Malay mud-bath. Relax with a cocktail as you enjoy the health benefits of an authentic Thai massage. A Langkawi spa holiday is the ideal way to re-cooperate and rejuvenate yourself, or rediscover romance with a loved one!

About Datai Langkawi

Situated upon the rugged North-West coast of Langkawi Island; enveloped by a lush ancient woodland – the Datai, Langkawi represents one of the best kept secrets of the Malaysian archipelago. Entrenched in legend, mythology and spiritual charm, the Langkawi hotel’s district alone attracts intrepid explorers, nature-lovers and hiking enthusiasts from all over the world, to what has now become a UNESCO World Geo-Park.

Langkawi’s topography is predominantly mountainous, with vast plains that sweep down from the jungle to meet the smooth sun-drenched coastline. Within Datai, the landscapes are typically hilly and covered in dense rainforest meeting the coastal frontier with sheer lime-stone drops. Such cliffs enclose private resort beaches belonging to Datai Hotel and The Andaman Resort. This terrain also lends itself to the naturally landscaped grounds of Datai Bay Golf Club – one of the premier 18-hole clubs, adjacent to the finest Langkawi accommodation.

Of all Langkawi hotels, The Datai holds a long-standing reputation for setting competitive standards and exceeding imagination. The enchantment begins as you approach The Datai Hotel, which at first glance resembles an opulent temple. Guarded by two statuesque horses, the timber-framed lobby is akin to some kind of ancient dining hall, complete with polished dark flooring and neatly arranged seating areas inviting you to relax. This by no means sets the precedent for the delights to follow. The entire complex comprises of terraces and mezzanine levels situated around the mirror-like, main heated pool. The adjacent canopied Pool Suite provides an area for relaxation away from the sun, while a fully equipped health spa and fitness centre lies just along the terrace. The Datai Hotel also offer full use of two tennis courts, mountain biking and private water sports facilities located on the private beach front.

Accommodation doesn’t come more contemporary than 100-room Datai. Options include pool-side suites, deluxe doubles and spacious “Superior Villas”. All are decorated and furnished to a decadent standard, exuding the minimalism that reflects the personality of the hotel. With sturdy wooden bedsteads, pristine white linens and generous mood lighting, the 54 “Deluxe Rooms” offer couples and families combined living and sleeping quarters with an extended en-suite and private balcony.

The “Superior Villas” are a chance to experience private luxury away from the main complex. Nestled upon the edge of the forest, these 2-bedroom villas are fully equipped with oversized double beds, dining area, digital entertainment system (including flat-screen LCD and DVD player), a “rainfall” shower room and fully stocked mini-bar. Pool Villas step up this luxury with the inclusion of a private plunge-pool and sun-lounger terrace. Over 40% of the rooms benefit from stunning panoramic ocean views.

Gastronomy has played a large part in sealing The Datai Hotel’s reputation as a premium resort. With four restaurants to choose from, one need never leave the grounds to find an exotic array of dishes with a Malay flavour. Al fresco dining is popular here due to the tropical climate, spectacular surroundings and fiery sunsets – all of which can be enjoyed from The Pavilion restaurant. Specialising in a blend of Thai and Asian cuisine; crab, authentic curries and seafood platters are just some of the mouth-watering dishes on offer.

Western delights can be found within the ballroom sized “Dining Room”, however the ultimate dining experience has to be within the “Gulai House”. Situated away from the main buildings, and accessed via a traditional “tipi” wooden bridge; the Gulai serves the very best of Malay and Indian cuisine offering both set, and a la carte menus. Expect a very unique dining experience, as the restaurant regularly hosts local musicians and dancers for colourful entertainment.

The Capricorn stops off at a number of cliff-bound beaches and lagoons where you may enjoy guided diving exploration, or a spot of fishing. Sea-kayaking, surfing and diving present additional exciting opportunities on offer from this luxurious hotel resort; a must for anyone seeking to experience the best of Langkawi Island.

About Langkawi

Encompassing 99 individual islands; the Asian utopia of Langkawi forms a large archipelago just off the Malaysian West coast. Rich in flora, fauna and jungle-like forests, these islands are home to a number of unique and rare bird species – as well as the primary marine habitat for an abundance of stingrays, dolphins and whales. The relatively temperate climate is punctuated by a relatively short “rain” season from August to September, however even during these conditions you’ll find temperatures still exceed 25 C.

The 99 islands that make up this great chain vary greatly in size; the largest being Langkawi Island at 320km ² (122 square miles). Despite a combined land-mass of over 40,000 square kilometres, only four of these paradise islands are inhabited: Pulau Langkawi, Pulau Rebak, Pulau Tuba and Pulau Dayang Bunting – by just under 100,000 people.

Famed for a number of elegant and luxurious resorts including The Andaman and eco-friendly Frangipani Langkawi, the island also benefits from strong fishing, agricultural and retail economies – largely helped by the influx of tourism since the 1980′s. This is none more evident than within the administrative capital of Kuah where an abundance of modern shopping complexes and administrative buildings have sprung up. Eagle Square with it’s two great symmetrical terraces is a prime example of a small capital slowly adopting the cosmopolitan styles of large Malaysian cities.

Despite this embrace for change and evolution, the natives of Langkawi are still fiercely proud and protective of their traditional heritage, including their way of life. The majority of the inhabited islands’ populations live within small communes known as kampongs – their houses made of thatch and locally sourced timbers. Many of the hotels have also adopted this traditional style within their own architectural composition – namely the Datai Hotel situated at the far North-West of Langkawi, amid some of the thickest forests on the island.

The paradisical archipelago has a charm and character that will appeal to every visitor, regardless of the type of holiday you seek. Pantai Cenang and neighbouring Tengah are the liveliest stretches of beach on the main island, swathed by a plethora of traditional restaurants, bars and clubs and home to a number of family-friendly attractions such as the Crocodile Farm, Underwater World, and Langkawi Cable Car, which heads to the peak of the island’s second largest mountain – Mount Mat Cinang.

Northern Langkawi is significantly more rugged than the sun-soaked South and prime location for outdoor adventures including climbing, cliff abseiling, and cave kayaking. Rebak Island hosts a significantly wider range of supervised outdoor activities including dirt track racing, horse-riding and scuba-diving tours to the populous coral reefs, off the coast of Rebak Island Resort.

Pulau Dayang Bunting is considerably quieter than her sister islands and best reached via boat from one of the Langkawi hotel resorts, or chartered ferry from Kuah. Miles upon miles of deserted caramel beaches invite sun-worshippers to relax in relatively secluded serenity, while the thick forested heartland presents the ideal place for quiet nature appreciation.

Whether you’re seeking the all-inclusive adrenaline thrills of water-sports and tackling the many sheer limestone cliff-faces Langkawi has to offer, or you wish to experience the solitude of a relaxing spa retreat – Langkawi and her multifarious family-friendly resorts will welcome you with open arms, warm hospitality and environments you’ll never forget.

Rebak Island Resort

Review of Rebak Island Resort

I had heard of Rebak Island Resort several times through brochures and travel guide books and thought that it was about time I explored this area as opposed to mainland Langkawi (where most of the tourists head to). What probably pushed my decision was the focus of an “island resort” whereby there would be a quiet, somewhat private, beach owned by the resort as well as the idea of a relaxing getaway from the hectic lifestyle of city centre.

What I would like to bring to attention is the ride to and from Rebak Island Resort. In order to get to the speedboat terminal, you would have to go through a dirt track with rainforests covering both left and right visuals. This brought out the closeness of wildlife and a tropical adventure definitely worth the experience. Once you had reached the speedboat terminal also known as the jetty reception, transportation by boat is regular at 15 minute intervals. Had you just missed the boat, the scenery and surroundings will definitely keep you company as you are exposed to the beautiful islands surrounding the port alongside the outreaching sea.

Rebak Island Resort offers transportation to and from the Rebak port by way of a golf buggy which I found rather peculiar. The reception of Rebak Island Resort is amazing in presentation and decoration giving it that tint of Eastern culture but at the same time holding the ambience of a calm and relaxing stay. I absolutely loved the location of Rebak Island Resort as not only was there sand and sea, the tropical wildlife from the rainforest made the area seem more natural than many other places.

In terms of accommodation, the room we stayed in, the Deluxe Villa, could not have been any better. It was located on the upper floor giving the window view an amazing outlook over the poolside and sea. Rebak Island Resort could not have made the Deluxe Villa any better in my opinion. In the room itself, there was a huge lounge area which included the dining space. In the lounge sat a massive flat screen TV and on top of that, the huge bedroom itself had its very own personal TV. There was an extension of a balcony which gave the room a nice touch especially when you wanted to spend some time gazing at the island before you whilst sipping a nice cup of coffee.

When it came to food, Rebak Island Resort satisfied my every needs. The main restaurant is called The Senari whereby breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served with a huge variety of meals. The quality is of its finest and definitely something you could not run out of choice for unless you intend to spend months there! The poolside bar serves food and drinks throughout the day on top of some marvelous cocktails which are very well stocked.

Although the pool is quite small in comparison to some other resorts, I didn’t find a problem with it seeing as the majority of loungers preferred the beach itself. The number of activities is huge ranging from trekking, cycling, water sports, etc. A definite must for those who need that luxurious holiday to relax.

Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort Langkawi

Review of Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa

My wife and I made a last minute 10 nights booking at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort Langkawi. This rush was driven by a desperate need for a holiday break from our hectic lives. Initially we had no clue where Langkawi was even located at, all we knew was that there was a package on the internet for a beach holiday and we were just about ready to take upon anything relaxing. Neither me nor my wife did the extra research about the accommodation quality at Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort Langkawi, call us lazy but when you have a work schedule as hectic as graveyard shifts, life seems quite short in time.

When the time came for a relaxed holiday at the beach, we were ready. To our surprise the convenience of the Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort was at a high level with only a shuffle of 5 to 10 minutes drive to and from the airport. The beach resort offered a personal airport pickup which we found very service friendly and extremely helpful. The minute we set eyes upon the resort itself, it absolutely stunned us.

What we saw was nothing close what you can get in the United Kingdom. The resort space was huge and beyond belief very well decorated and laid out. When we headed towards the reception in request for our room and keys, we were greeted by friendly staff members who were sociable without the tint of being there because it was work to them, in fact, they helped recommend several nice places to visit as well as things to keep us busy with although still maintaining that relaxation mode of a holiday.

In regards to accommodation, the rooms were absolutely huge. In fact, my wife and I were surprised at the space we received for such a reasonable price we had paid. The bathroom included a powder room section which is great for the women, and a walk through wardrobe which felt just like the movies.

The facilities came great and the both of us found absolutely no reason to venture too far away from Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort since it had pretty much everything you needed for an amazing relaxed holiday. Aside having a private beach to the resort, there are two massive swimming pools (one of which has a water slide – so bring the kids along!), a good playground, a mini animal farm (great for the kids again), and a mini golf course. I would have to note though that if you are interested in further explorations, the location of the resort is perfectly in between the main town and the cultural and scenic sites – giving you the best of both worlds.

Throughout the resort there are a couple of restaurants and bars which provide amazing quality food. The diversity and variety of the food found in Langkawi was a shock to both my wife and I as we both have to agree that Malaysian food has become our favourite choice. Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort had impressed us beyond belief and we cannot wait to go back again!
